The Road Ahead for Lithium in Mississippi

What is Lithium and Direct Lithium Extraction

Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE)
Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) is a method for recovering lithium from salty underground water sources called brines. The brine is pumped to the surface and passed through a system that selectively captures lithium ions (Li⁺) while allowing most other dissolved salts to remain in the water.
How it works (simplified):
-
Lithium-containing brine is brought to the surface.
-
The brine is pretreated so the extraction system operates efficiently.
-
A selective material or process captures lithium ions while other ions pass through.
-
The captured lithium is released into a much smaller volume of liquid, creating a lithium-rich solution.
-
This solution is further purified and processed into commercial products such as lithium carbonate (Li₂CO₃) or lithium hydroxide (LiOH).
-
The remaining brine, now largely depleted of lithium, is typically reinjected underground.
One-sentence definition:
DLE is like using a specialized filter that pulls lithium out of brine, rather than relying on slow evaporation in large ponds.
What Lithium Is
Lithium (Li) is a chemical element (atomic number 3) and the lightest metal on the periodic table. In natural brines, lithium exists mainly as a positively charged ion (Li⁺). Because lithium ions move easily between materials, they are essential for lithium-ion batteries, which power smartphones, power tools, electric vehicles, and grid-scale energy storage systems.
